Noun Definition and Types

Types of noun a noun is a naming word which refers to people, place, things, and abstract ideas such as feelings and qualities, e.g., Akbar, Kolkata, taj mahal, book, etc.

Example of Noun:

Raja is a brilliant student. The noun raja refers to a particular student, but the noun student may be applied to any other student as well as raja. Hence, we call raja a proper noun, and students common nouns. Types of nouns.

Types of Noun

Types of noun are broadly divided into two classes:

  1. Proper Nouns (capital letter nouns)
  2. Common Nouns (small letter nouns)

Again, Common Nouns are subdivided into four classes:

  1. Common Nouns (count nouns)
  2. Collective Nouns (group nouns)
  3. Mass Nouns (material nouns)
  4. Abstract Nouns (Quality nouns)

1. What is a Proper Noun Definition?

A proper noun is the name of a particular person, place, animal, or thing. (proper means one’s own name).

Proper Noun Examples: Gujarat, Sikkim, the Gita, Mr Abey, Vidyasagar, the Ramayana, the Kalka mail, etc.

Note: Proper noun is sometimes used as common nouns, e.g.

2. What is a Common Noun Definition?

A general common noun is a name given in common to every person or thing of the same class or kind. (Common means shared by all)

Common Noun Examples: River, boy, girl, horse, book, table, sea, village, town, dog, cow, man, woman, pen, pencil, etc.

Note: A common noun is known as count noun as we can count the name of any object. 

3. What is a Collective Noun Definition?

A collective noun is the name of a group or collection of persons or things or animals taken as a whole.

Collective Noun Examples: Family, committee, audience, majority, parliament, public, team, army, union class, etc.

Note: A collective noun is known as a group noun as it refers to a group of persons, things, or animals. A group noun is singular and can take either a singular or a plural verb.

4. What is a Mass Noun?

A mass noun is the name of matter or substance.

Mass Noun Examples: Milk, honey, oil, sugar, tea, water, butter, glass, gold, iron, silver, paper, etc.

Note: A mass noun is known as a material noun as we cannot count but weight them.

6. What is an Abstract Noun?

An abstract noun denotes an action, idea, quality, or state of something physical or concrete.

Abstract Noun Examples: Happiness, goodness, honesty, movement, poverty, size, youth, revenge, choice, etc.

6. What are Count and Uncount Nouns?

Countable Noun: 

The nouns refer to people or things which can be counted, e.g., day, brother, notebook, boy, girl, pen, dog, etc.

Uncountable Noun:

The nouns refer to qualities, ideas, substances that cannot be counted, e.g., soil, air, water, silver, happiness, etc.

Note: These Nouns make up the largest group of Nouns in English

Difference Between Count and Uncount Nouns



  1. Count nouns usually have singular and plural forms: like boy – boys, house – houses, hall – halls, etc.
  1. Uncounted nouns usually have singular forms: like diesel, water, rain, information, petrol, etc.

2. When used in the singular, they have a determiner in front of them: at the bike, the king, an apple, my home, etc.

    2.  They are not usually used with the determiners the, a, or an. 

Number of Nouns

Only count nouns can be counted. They have two numbers:

  1. Singular
  2. Plural
  1. Singular Number:

    A noun that denotes one person or thing is said to be in the singular number. 

    Examples: An umbrella, a woman, a man, a bird, etc.

  2. Plural Number:

    A noun that denotes more than one person or thing is said to be in the plural number.

    Examples: Six umbrellas, three women, two men, four birds, etc.
